The companies providing the space from their own server for use by their clients are called Web Hosts. These companies also provide connectivity to the internet, usually in data center. Provision of data center space and internet connectivity for other servers to be placed in their data center may also be done by the web hosts. This is also known as colocation which is considered one type of hosting.

Hosting services differ significantly in terms of scope. Considered a basic form is webpage and file hosting in a small scale in which files are uploaded through a process called FTP or File Transfer Protocol or via web interface. Basically, files are delivered the same way or somewhat "processed". Several Internet Service Providers or ISP's promote this to their subscribers at no cost.

Individuals may also ask for web page hosting services from the other providers. Hosting for personal websites is usually free, sponsored by advertisements and is generally cheap. Web site hosting for business is oftentimes more expensive.

There are several types of web hosting. Some of the services that are limited to the web are as follows:

  • Free web hosting service is one of the most common. This is the type of web hosting that is free and usually supported by advertisement. This service is oftentimes limited as compared with paid hosting.
  • Shared web hosting service is another type wherein one's web site is on the same server together with other sites. Sharing ranges from a few to as much as hundreds or even thousands.
  • Reseller web hosting is the type which allows the clients to serve as the web hosts. Reseller's accounts are significantly variable in size and may also have its own virtual dedicated server to a colocated server.
  • Virtual Dedicated Server is a type of web hosting wherein a server is divided into virtual servers. Users have the impression as if they are on their own dedicated server although they are sharing a server along with other users. A root access for every user's virtual space may be provided which is referred to as VPS or virtual private server.
  • These are just a few of the hosting services limited to the web. Other types of web hosting services are Managed Hosting Service, Colocation Web Hosting, Clustered Hosting, Grid Hosting and Home Server.
